Wonsan - Mt. Kumgang (Estern Part)
The project has been propelled to develop Wonsan-Mt. Kumgang region, one of the leading tourist regions of the country into a world-famous international tourism zone.
Supreme leader Kim Jong Un taught on his Juche 104 (2015) New Year’s Message to push forward the project to develop economic zones including Wonsan-Mt. Kumgang
International Tourist Zone.
On June 11, Juche 103 (2014) a decree of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK was issued to set up Wonsan-Mt. Kumgang International
Tourist Zone.
An international seminar on investment in Wonsan-Mt. Kumgang International Tourist Zone and the ceremony of starting Wonsan region construction work were
held in Kalma Street in Wonsan in May Juche 104 (2015). Kalma Airport was updated as the international air transport centre in Wonsan-Mt. Kumgang International Tourist
Zone. |
Wonsan, the hub of the Zone is the capital of Kangwon Province and a port city. The Zone is blessed with rich tourism resources with 676 sights, 142 historical relics,
9 natural lakes and 4 mineral springs & spas. Mt. Kumgang, 105km of Wonsan has been called a symbolic natural beauty of mountain from old times, and it is a mixture of
all views of peaks, sea, plateau, lake and etc.
The Zone is highlighted by the world-class Masikryong Ski Resort and fantastic beaches such as Songdowon and
Myongsasipni. The 208km Pyongyang-Wonsan Tourist Motorway and a railway along the area of East Sea are extended. The transportation infrastructures such as ports and airport are provided.
According to the development plan the project covers the total area of 43,600 hectares including Wonsan, Popdong, Anbyon,
Thongchon, Kosong and Kumgang Counties. Residential, industrial areas, tourist resorts and accommodating facilities are planned for construction in Wonsan. The city centre is to be lined with shopping malls,
sci-tech streets and cultural recreation centres. The newly-planned Kalma Street is arranged with modern residential area for over 3 000 families.
The city comes with changes in its appearance with aquariums, indoor swimming pools, a dolphinarium, hotels, a riding club, a golf course and a shopping mall with
pavilions by country. The Sokwang Temple region is changed with trekking routes and accommodating facilities and Thongchon region with modern hotels and varieties of
service establishments.
Mt. Kumgang will offer the visitors with observing gondolas and modern hotels with over 10,000 beds. The attractions including Lagoon Samil will be arranged with
hotels, amusement centres and folk streets. With the plan of developing industrial areas, the industrial establishments such as fish processing and foodstuff factories
are to be built retaining the peculiarities of the Zone. With the plan of building infrastructures, Wonsan Port
is to be modernized, reconstructed and new building of railways will be carried out in an extensive way on the principles of
pro-environment.
Rebuilding roads, building ring roads, expanding generating & transforming capacities for providing electricity and communication and building advanced communication
establishments are to be progressed. It takes measures for modernizing sewage system, improving atmospheric problems and forming large green spaces as one of the
protective works of environment.
Foreign economic groups, individual enterprisers and overseas Koreans who wish to invest according to the laws on economic development region and special international
tourist region of the DPRK are allowed for free economic activities establishing the industries, branches and offices. They are also provided with preferential
economic conditions for employing, land use, customs, tax payment and so on. |
